The City and Clerkenwell

The City is where London’s history began with a small settlement by the River Thames but sadly most of the original structures burnt down in the great fire of London in 1666. The heart of the City is dominated by commerce, particularly the financial sector, and it has limited residential accommodation. Because of this, restaurants and bars are often closed at weekends. St Pauls Cathedral St Pauls Cathedral on Ludgate Hill dates from the 17th Century and is one of London’s most famous landmarks. Clerkenwell sits on the edge of this financial sector and is now a fashionable media enclave – it is made up of a mixture of Georgian and Victorian town houses and modern housing estates.
