Budleigh Salterton
Budleigh Salterton lies approximately 15 miles south of Exeter at the mouth of the river Otter. The name Salterton is derived from the days when the town’s main industry was salt panning. At that time it was named “Ottermouth”. It is in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and its reed bed at the mouth of the river is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It sits along the South West Coast Path, with clifftop routes eastward to Sidmouth and westward to Exmouth. The pebble beach and cliffs are part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site.
The town centre with its unique and much prized selection of shops, most of which are still independently owned, is only a short walk from the sea front. The high street includes various gift shops, tea rooms, and interiors shops, many of which are housed in interesting and historic buildings. Apart from these shops, the area is predominantly residential with a large number of high quality properties. The area is very sought after and is also a popular place to retire to. The town is an attractive coastal hot spot for many of the local villages but being a pebble beach rather than sandy, it can be quieter in summer than some of its sandy neighbours. It does however have more than its fair share of events throughout the year including Jazz, Literary, Music and Drama Festivals plus Gala week and various operatic productions. Famously Sir Walter Raleigh was born just two miles away from the town at Hayes Barton.
