Stow-on-the-Wold & Moreton-in-Marsh
‘Stow and Moreton’ are two quintessentially Cotswold towns, separated by just a few miles but quite distinct from each other. Stow stands on a hill (the ‘Wold’, a high, wooded place) at the crossing of two ancient byways, commanding the surrounding countryside, and is famed for antique shops, art galleries and high quality clothes shops.
The coaching town of Moreton-in-Marsh straddles the Fosse Way just a few miles to the north of Stow and is known for its market, which dates from 1227, located in the broad High Street setting and is a favourite on the Cotswold tourist trail with several hotels, restaurants and other facilities nearby. Its railway station provides a convenient link to Oxford and London, or Worcester and thence to Birmingham and the Midlands. Close to the town is the famed Four Shires Stone, where four counties – Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Worcestershire and Warwickshire – converge.
