Hay-on-Wye
Hay-on-Wye lies just on the Welsh side of the border with England, in Powys although it its postal address is Herefordshire! Notwithstanding the technicalities of location, Hay is a delightful small town (population: 1500), with an outstanding reputation as a bibliophile’s dream – it is home to a world-famous book festival in May-June each year, as well as a plethora of enticing bookshops that sometimes seem to comprise the whole town. It’s not all books though, as the literary festival is swiftly followed by food and crafts festivals and the Royal Welsh Show. Just on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, Hay is a wonderful centre for walking and other outdoor pursuits, and the surrounding hill countryside is spectacular.
